Media and public perspectives frequently link the issues of mental health and violence. However, in reality the relationship between the two is complex and widely contested. This course examines the evidence, enabling participants to identify the aspects of mental distress that potentially elevate the risk of violence to others.

Substance Abuse

This course provides an introduction to dual diagnosis, the co-existence of mental distress and substance abuse. The impact of substance abuse (e.g. heroin, crack cocaine, alcohol) on mental health will be explored. Participants will also focus on issues such as assessment and treatment.

Depression is one of the most common forms of mental distress. This course will examine causal factors, common signs and symptoms, self-harm and suicide. Treatment options will also be explored. Participants will develop an understanding of how to identify, assess and treat people presenting as depressed or low in mood..

Understanding Psychosis

This course is suitable for a range of practitioners and provides participants with a thorough introduction to the much-misunderstood concept of psychosis. Core issues such as cause, symptoms, risk assessment and treatment options will be discussed. The impact of stigma on the individual and family will also be addressed.
